Beasts of Maravilla Island is an upcoming 3D Adventure game for Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, PS4, and PC. Explore Maravilla Island's magical jungles to discover extraordinary creatures, learn their behaviors, and photograph their majesty!

As a team, our goal is to create a game that emphasizes meaningful, non-violent interactions with magical creatures that challenges the notion we need to act in a violent way towards digital creatures to enjoy them. With over 50+ creatures, there are plenty of opportunities for players to discover a unique beast and interact with them peacefully through photography.

As designer, my goal was to create puzzles and interactions with our creatures that were simple, yet engaging enough for players to feel immersed and connected with Maravilla Island. In each of our three ecosystems, I made sure that our environment layouts lead to unique moments of discovery that induce child-like wonder for our players when finding a new critter.

My work included:

  • Creature placement / movement with proprietary tools

  • Level Layouts / Greyboxing

  • Foliage placement

  • Puzzle Design

  • Tutorial Design

  • Creature Interaction Design

  • Design Documentation

  • UI Prototyping

  • Cutscenes (Unity Timeline)

This project started as an Advanced Games Project at USC Games, and has been through many iterations. Due to the time constraints of the course, our team had to react quickly to feedback and do tight design turn arounds.

After the course ended, our team was so passionate about the project that we decided to work on it further, which lead us to a successfully funded Kickstarter campaign in July 2020.

After receiving a publishing deal, our focus was to playtest and polish our experience to be the absolute best version of the vision we had. For me, this work included meeting publisher deadlines, polishing level layouts, and continuing to create unique photo opportunities for our players.
